October at Crossroads - Home

In September, we used the words and wisdom from the Old and New Testaments to learn the basics of who Jesus was, is, and what He teaches us today. We learned how Christians can be crazy, how Jesus is not just another religious figure, and how sin enters our world and can seriously affect our relationship with God.

In October, we take the basics of Christianity and ask the question, "Now what?" Now that we have been introduced to the basics, what do we do with the information we have? We will spend the month investigating the truths of Christianity and how the relationship we have with Christ can create a new way of living life.

Church can be different - Home

Crossroads is a community of normal (and abnormal people) who represent every (and we mean every) group in society. Just show up and you’ll know what we mean. We are people in search of a real relationship with God and we are passionate about inviting people to join us on our spiritual journey. We are relaxed and encourage you to be relaxed in your attitude and how you dress. We don't take an offering. We don't have "membership". We don't pre-qualify you. We want to convey God's grace and closeness in everything we do.

Our staff is made up of normal, broken, and – in some cases – people who have been hurt by church in the past. We are on a spiritual journey, too. We struggle with the same stuff and celebrate the same victories as everyone else. We raise our kids, go to PTA meetings, work other jobs to make ends meet, drive mini vans, and want to experience a relevant church and a loving God that meets us where we are.

If you're thinking about trying church for the first time or re-entering church after being away, we are here.

Crossroads Community Church has never taken an offering. Weird, huh? Our budget is completely dependent upon gifts deposited in seven wooden boxes in the back of one of our three campus sites. In order for us to keep finding, serving, and loving people in our community, our need for consistent giving is so important. Here is how you can help:Pray for the outreach efforts of Crossroads Make a financial contribution to Crossroads on a monthly or quarterly basis. Checks can be mailed to: Crossroads Community Church, PO Box 4181, Visalia, CA, 93278Use our secure server to make an online contribution. This way, you can create an online giving schedule that automatically deducts from your credit or debit card. Each month, your giving will be withdrawn electronically from your bank account. Your gift will be received at the same time each month, and you can change the amount at any time by resubmitting the form. You must create an account prior to giving online.

Each month, CKidz adopts a mini-mission. During the month of October, classrooms will create homemade masterpieces to be sold to earn money for the Make a Wish Foundation .

 SUMMER CAMP

Wow! Nearly 200 children enjoyed 4 different CKidz camps this summer. It is the goal of Crossroads to provide scholarships to every child in need of financial help to attend camp. To help provide scholarships in 2008, CKidz will collect cans and bottles every Sunday. Please drop off your cans and bottles next to the Crossroads trailer in the Visalia Convention Center loading dock between 8:00-11:30 on Sundays! Thank you!

 FAMILY MINI-MISSION LIFEGROUP

CKIDZ is excited to launch a new lifegroup for families. Group leader Elena Wilson will help families prepare and serve meals for local shelters every fourth Wednesday of the month at 5:00 PM. For more information, contact Elena at 936-4501.

Additonal Newz...

Children in 4th and 5th grade can apply for leadership positions in the CKidz classrooms. Current CKidz lifegroup openings: choir, sports, rollerskating, playgroup, mini-missions. Call Kristin to start your own CKidz lifegroup! Please pray for CKidz outreach programs: free preschool at the local homeless shelter and apartment play & pray.

"God did not give us a Spirit that makes us afraid. He gave us a Spirit of power and love." 2 Timothy 1:7

Halloween can cause confusion for parents with its crazy mixture of costumes, creatures, and haunted houses. Should we encourage children to celebrate a holiday with pagan roots? Perhaps a different message can be taught to your children...

Halloween is a wonderful opportunity for parents to teach about God's victory over evil! Join the little goblins and share the joy of Jesus! CKidz will be involved with three huge harvest celebrations this month!

For sixteen years, Kids' Festival has entertained Valley families with presentations by Riatta Ranch, dog trials, car shows, carnival rides, and fantastic stage performances. On October 18 from 9-4 PM, children will have the opportunity to be on stage as CKidz provides an interactive game-show presentation throughout the day at the Heritage Complex in Tulare. Adults will enjoy Crossroads worship band performances while their children jump on bouncers and climb walls! Bring your whole family; it is an event they will not want to miss.

CKidz will also join forces with Visalia's newest children's facility to provide a safe event from 5:00-9:00 PM on Halloween night. Boingos, located off of Shirk and 198, is a 10,000 square foot facility that houses multiple huge bouncers for children including obstacle courses and gladiator games. Kids will fill themselves full of candy, win dozens of trinkets at carnival games, and create memories that will last a lifetime!

Looking for something less organized? Crossroads will visit Vossler farms in Visalia on Wednesday, October 8 at 5:00. They offer train rides for kids, corn mazes for both little people and teenagers, food, and many free games. Great family fun!

Ask most children what is an important theme at CKidz, and they will yell BARF! Jesus challenged us to Bring A Real Friend to Him whenever we have an opportunity. Please accept the CKidz challenge to BARF during the harvest season! Contact Kristin at 804-4076 or Kristin@visaliacrossroads.com for more information.

Jamie McGlasson is the new Pastor of Life Groups at Crossroads. Jamie brings many years of experience in ministry to Crossroads and now leads one of the fastest growing ministries at church. New life groups are formed every month and, without fail, there are more people who want to be involved in a life group than the number of life groups available. With some great help from Cheryl Leighty and Dudley Gearhart, Jamie is working to make it possible for many more life groups to start at Crossroads in 2008.

Jamie is married to Analia and they have two children; Rebeka and Sarah.

Crossroads Devotional - July 17, 2008

Faith. I often wonder what "it" really is. I have heard a lot of pastors use the phrase, "by faith....", then you fill in the blank. Stuff like, "By faith your finances will be better." "By faith your family will be saved." "By faith your Cadillac will show up in your driveway." By faith. Most of the time I write those guys off. But faith is the foundation of the Christian walk. Faith is not something you believe. No. Faith is something you do. Faith is not something you think about. It's something you act on. Faith is not an opinion or a conviction or a philosophy. Faith is an activity. It is obeying God and doing what He says to do even if it seems impossible. But let's look first at why is it important to have faith, anyway? Look at this verse: "Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him" Hebrews 11:6 (this is one of those verses that I don't like, but I have to deal with!) Now it says there that without faith, it is impossible to please God. That says how important it is. Without faith, it is impossible to please God. You see the Christian life is really pretty simple. Sum it up in two words: love and faith. Love God with all your heart. Love your neighbor as yourself. And have faith. That's it. Without faith, it is impossible to please God. So you can see the importance of it. What is it? What is faith? Well, I can't describe it in one sentence, because faith is like a diamond. It's multifaceted. It has lots of aspects to it. So over the next few weeks in our weekly devotionals, I will talk about what faith is. The first aspect of faith is this, faith is believing when I don't see it.

Read Hebrews 11:1. "Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see." The words "sure" and "do not see" go together. It sounds like a contradiction, but the Bible teaches that faith is visualizing the future in the present. It's being sure of what you don't see. It is seeing it in advance. Man says: "Seeing is believing." God says the opposite. He says: "Believing is seeing." And some things in life, you have to believe them before you can see them. In 1960, JFK stood up and said: "Let's put a man on the moon by the end of the decade." When he said that, the technology had not even been invented to put a man on the moon. But some things have to be believed before you can see them. Faith is simply trusting God to turn dreams into reality. Because nothing happens 'til somebody believes it's possible. What do you need to believe for this week? What is it that you need God to do that may seem impossible? I am not talking about something to make you more comfortable, but something that will give God more attention and show that we are responding to what God is telling us to do. Faith. Believing without seeing.

Teaching Pastor

Crossroads Devotional - May 29, 2008

Commitment number 3. When you become a Christian, God says, "I want you to represent Me in the way you act. Be a model of My life." The term "Christian" used to be a derogatory term. When they first used it, it was a slur. An epitaph. It meant, You're one of those Christ-ians. The word "Christian" literally means "little Christ". They'd say, "That person is just like that Jesus guy. She's a little christ'. He's a christi-ian.'" Has anybody ever accused you of being like Christ? As you grow, God wants you to learn to act the way Jesus acted. Think the way He thought. Feel the way about life the way He felt. God wants you to learn to make decisions the way Jesus made decisions. God wants you to treat people the way He treated people. My belief and my behavior, my attitudes and my actions have to come under the Lordship of Christ. We say, "I want to act like Jesus. What would Jesus do in this situation?" This is the goal of spiritual maturity. God wants you to grow up and be like Jesus. Be like Christ in every area of your life.

How does that happen? Is there a Jesus pill I can take and the next day all of a sudden, I'm super saint? No. There's no single tape, no book, no single conference that you can go to that will make you all of a sudden super mature. There's no individual experience that will make you instantly mature and you never sin again and you're never tempted. No, it's a hard process. A long, hard process. It will take the rest of your life. But the secret of becoming like Christ is to get into the Bible. This has the mind of Christ, the attitudes, the actions - in this book. The more you get this book into your heart and mind, then the more you're going to be like Christ. That doesn't happen by accident. You don't just buy a Bible and set it on your coffee table and, by osmosis, it fills the room and you feel spiritual. You can't tuck it under your pillow at night and put your head down and think it's going to seep through. Do you know how you get this book in your heart and mind? You've got to commit to it. That's the third commitment. It's the commitment to God's word because as I become committed to His word, I become a model of His life. You have to dedicate yourself to learning the Bible.

Hebrews 6:1"Let us go on and become mature in our understanding as strong Christians ought to be." Also: "Commit yourself to instruction, attune your ears to hear words of knowledge." You've got to get into some Bible studies, get into this book. How many of you believe that all the answers to life are on television? How many of you believe that all the answers to life are in the newspaper? In People magazine? How many of you believe that the answers to life are in God's word, the Bible? Why do we spend more time watching and reading something we don't believe than something we do? If I've got all kinds of problems and the answers are here, why would I go watch a TV show? That doesn't make sense. It's a waste of time. If I've got a problem, I need to get into this book. I need to find out how to think the way Jesus thought. The Bible says that one of the marks of maturity is that you know the word. "They must be committed to the revealed truths of the Christian faith and must live with a clear conscience." If I'm going to be all that God wants me to be, I commit my life to Christ. Then I must commit to being a member of His family and a model of His life.

The Visalia community is Blessed with many loving and educational Christian preschools that Crossroads supports. Our goal is to find, serve, and love children who are still searching for the loving arms of their Heavenly Father. Therefore, we provide a daily preschool program for the residents of the Visalia Rescue Mission, a homeless shelter for mothers and their children. This provides an opportunity for moms to attend important meetings while their children are in a safe and comfortable environment.

How can you help?

* Pray for the teachers and participants in the CKidz Crossing Preschool.

* Provide supplies or snacks for the CKidz Crossing Preschool.

* Share your time and talents in the classroom at the CKidz Crossing Preschool.

For praises, questions, or concerns please contact Allison at 901-5725 or allison@visaliacrossroads.com.

Tonya Haggard and Georgana Gearhart feel Blessed to spend Sunday mornings in Baby'K! It is important to them that parents can relax and have an hour of power in church. Each Sunday, they look forward to sharing their love for Jesus Christ with your infants.

Tonya's husband Scott is a proud Kings County firefighter and they are the parents of Hunter and Cory. Georgana is married to volunteerman Dudley, and they are excited to be first-time grandparents!

Mini-K teacher Barb Shy is an important part of the team as she plays a variety of important roles. She is also an active member of her children's PTA and volunteers countless hours in the community. Barb is very excited to introduce your little ones to Christ with lots of singing, dancing, and laughing!

Barb's husband Dave is a local firefighter, and they are proud parents of the infamous Shy boys: Erik and Trevor.

This December, they will welcome a new daughter into the world!
